For the past three months, AMPHS has had its boots on the ground working to ensure that our community has the food, PPE, and health information needed to stay safe this winter during the second wave of the virus. With the cold weather upon us, many in Sunset Park are struggling with food insecurity on top of the risk of getting sick. They are forced to choose between paying their rent, putting food on the table and their health. AMPHS is here to help every step of the way so that our community members don’t have to make those challenging decisions.
Every week, we are distributing 1,500 pounds of food and thousands of pieces of PPE to over 100 families in need, totaling over 400,000 lbs of food distributed in the past 6 months. This season, we provided over 400 flu shots in the community to ensure that our families stay protected. Every day, we field calls, connect community members to care, and offer free mental health services, serving over 500 families to date. Since May, we have distributed nearly $150,000 in cash assistance to 200+ families. We publish COVID-19 education materials and workshops every week. As the Census came to close, we helped 8,163 people complete their forms through phone and text and outreach events, counting 29,000 unique individuals. We also registered over 100 voters and contacted 130,000 voters to help get out the vote as the election approached.
The holiday season is upon us. We invite you to kick it off with us on Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving back. On Tuesday December 1, you’ll have the chance to join people around the world to support a cause that is close to your heart. This Giving Tuesday, please support AMPHS’ work to make care more accessible to immigrant New Yorkers through a donation to our GoFundMe. Please spread the word to friends and family that also want to make an impact. We thank you for your continuous support of our work.
AMPHS November Updates
Thanksgiving Meal Distribution
This year we ensured that no family was left hungry on Thanksgiving. In addition to our weekly food distribution events, we joined forces with Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez, Senator Zellnor Myrie, City Council Member Carlos Menchaca, NYU Langone Health, The Campaign Against Hunger, and MetroPlus to distribute turkeys and groceries to over 600 families this past week.
“Protect Our Schools” Flu Shot Clinics
There has been a lot of uncertainty about what will happen when the COVID-19 pandemic collides with flu season. Without widespread flu vaccination, the overlap of the flu season and the COVID-19 pandemic could not only overwhelm hospitals in New York City but make community members more vulnerable to the effects of COVID-19. As a part of the “Protect Our Schools” flu shot campaign, we traveled across the Sunset Park to offer flu shots to anyone that needed them, regardless of insurance or documentation status, with three of those events taking place at local public schools to ensure parents and their children are vaccinated.
We provided over 400 flu shots to community members, the majority who are uninsured. We would like to thank our partners Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, CVS Pharmacy and Duane Reade for their support to make this possible.
Week of Action
Following our successful Week of Action in August, where we distributed posters and 35,000 face masks across 700 businesses, we are launching another Week of Action to assist small businesses and vendors in response to the recent surge in COVID cases. Beginning in November, we canvassed over 30 street vendors and small businesses to drop off COVID resource guides, “wear your mask” posters, and 1500 pieces of PPE. Our Week of Action will continue into the week of December 1st for the neighborhoods of Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, and Besonhurst.
Contact us Tuesday to Saturday from 10AM to 6PM at 212-256-9036 for more information regarding our services.
